About Us

AMCI Acquisition Corp II is a newly organized blank check company formed for the purpose of effecting a merger with a business focused on decarbonizing the heavy industrial complex and transitioning the global energy mix to a lower carbon footprint. Our sponsor is an affiliate of the AMCI group of companies. AMCI invests in and operates industrial businesses focused on natural resources, transportation, infrastructure, metals and energy. AMCI has now invested over $1.7 billion in 40 industrial companies and has an existing portfolio consisting of 21 companies located around the world.

AMCI Acquisition Corp. I completed a business combination with Advent Technologies, Inc on February 4, 2021.

Management Team

Nimesh Patel, CEO & Director

  • Nimesh is a Managing Director, Co-head of Investments and a member of the Investment Committee for AMCI Group

Brian Beem, President & Director

  • Brian is a Managing Director, Co-head of Investments and a member of the Investment Committee for AMCI Group
  • Since Brian joined the Investment Committee at AMCI, AMCI has invested $1.6 billion of its capital and approximately $0.7 billion of co-investor capital across the global industrial, transportation and natural resources sectors
  • Brian was an officer of AMCI Acquisition Corp., a SPAC that successfully completed a business combination with Advent Technologies, Inc. in February 2021
  • Brian has served on the Boards of Directors of 14 companies during his time at AMCI, and has served on the Board of Jupiter Mines Ltd (ASX: JMS) since October 2019
  • Prior to joining AMCI, Brian worked at First Reserve Corporation, a leading private equity firm specializing in the energy industry. While at First Reserve, Brian worked on several co-investments with AMCI, including the formation of AMCI Capital L.P.
  • Brian started his career at Merrill Lynch in New York, where he worked in the financial sponsors and energy & power groups in the investment banking division
  • Brian graduated cum laude from Princeton University with an A.B. in Politics

Patrick Murphy, CFO

  • Patrick is a Managing Director for AMCI Group
  • Patrick leads AMCI’s iron ore business and its joint venture business relationships with the global industrial groups China Baowu Steel and POSCO
  • Patrick represents AMCI’s interests and serves on the Boards of Directors of a number of companies including Juno Minerals Limited (ASX:JNO)
  • Patrick joined AMCI in 2018 after spending the previous 11 years in the global investment group at Macquarie as a Managing Director in Mining Finance, Commodities & Global Markets division
  • Patrick specialized in deploying Macquarie’s balance sheet across the capital spectrum inclusive of passive and active equity investments, structured debt, greenfield project finance, structured derivative lending and commodity hedging
  • Patrick holds a Bachelor of Laws and a Bachelor of Commerce from The University of Western Australia

Hans Mende, Non-Executive Director

  • Hans is the Executive Chairman of the AMCI Group
  • Hans co-founded AMCI, with nominal capital, and has grown the company into a multi-billion dollar global enterprise
  • During his career, he has been a member of the Board of Directors of numerous public companies, including Jupiter Mines Ltd (ASX: JMS), Whitehaven (ASX:WHC), Felix Resources Limited (FLX:AX), Alpha Natural Resources (NYSE:ANR), Quintana Maritime (NASDAQ: QMAR), Foundation Coal Holdings, Inc. and NewWorld Resources PLC (WSE:NWR)
  • Hans was the Executive Chairman of AMCI Acquisition Corp., a SPAC that successfully completed a business combination with Advent Technologies, Inc. in February 2021
  • Prior to founding AMCI Group in 1986, Hans served at Thyssen Group in various senior executive positions including President of Thyssen Carbometal Inc.

Dr. Adrian (Adi) Paterson, Independent Director

  • Adi Paterson is the Principal and Founder of Siyeva Consulting
  • Prior to founding Siyeva in 2021, Adi worked as the CEO for Australia’s Nuclear Science and Technology Organization (ANSTO), one of Australia’s largest public research organizations and recognized as an international player in nuclear science and technology
  • During his time at ANSTO, Adi had strategic oversight and responsibility for ANSTO’s multi-faceted portfolio of activities, including securing funding and operating the Australian Synchrotron, a major research facility serving as an innovation hub in southeast Melbourne
  • Adi ensured integrated operations the for Open Pool Australian Light-Water (OPAL) Reactor at ANSTO – which provides isotopes for medical diagnosis and treatment, access to neutrons for science and irradiation services for Australian and overseas users – ultimately becoming one of the most productive reactors in its class globally
  • In addition to his time at ANSTO, Adi has experience in key policy areas as a fellow of the Australian Academy of Technology and Engineering (ATSE), Engineers Australia (EA) and the Royal Society of New South Wales
  • Adi holds a BSc in Chemistry and a PhD in Engineering, both from the University of Cape Town and an Honorary Doctor of Science from the University of Wollongong

Jill Watz, Independent Director

  • Jill is Managing Director of Ascian Technology Advisors, offering advisory services on business strategy, technology development, operational management and financing for early and growth-stage companies in the energy technology and natural resource sectors
  • Jill is a Senior Advisor to AltaRock Energy, a Khosla Ventures backed geothermal technology development company focused on bringing the next generation of advanced geothermal resources to scale
  • From 2008-2014, Jill served as a Venture Partner for Vulcan Capital, the $10 billion investment arm of Paul G Allen’s family foundation. At Vulcan, Jill was responsible for investment strategy, due diligence and portfolio management in the clean technology sector
  • Jill previously was with the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in a variety of research and management roles for science and technology development in national security, intelligence, energy and climate
  • Jill has a B.S. degree in Chemical Engineering from University of California and S.M. degrees in both Civil and Environmental Engineering and Technology and Policy from Massachusetts Institute of Technology

Kate Burson, Independent Director

  • Kate is the Principal and Founder of KCB Advisers where she works with seed to growth stage clean technology companies (energy, mobility, and natural resource management) on growth, market development, market entry and business development strategies
  • Previously, Kate worked at Tesla where she was among the first commercial hires for its energy business. She led market entry, policy, and business development for energy storage across the east coast
  • Prior to joining Tesla, Kate co-led energy policy for New York state.  Kate developed and deployed a new strategy for a distributed, networked electric grid – powered by clean energy. Her initiative grew into the State’s Reforming the Energy Vision, REV, which Kate co-developed and managed
  • Kate graduated magna cum laude from Vanderbilt University with a B.A. in History and earned a J.D. from Washington University in St. Louis

Mark Pinho, Independent Director

  • Mark is a Partner of Oak Hill Capital and has been part of the firm since 2021. Mark is responsible for originating, structuring and managing investments for the firm’s Consumer group
  • Prior to joining Oak Hill, Mark was the Managing Partner of the St Victor Group, and a Partner and Co-Founder of 4×4 Capital
  • Prior to that, he spent 12 years at Soros Fund Management, where he was a Managing Director in the private equity group
  • Mark earned a B.S. degree from the University of Virginia and an M.B.A. degree from The Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, where he was a Joseph P. Wharton fellow
